How To Spot Authentic Diane Von Furstenberg

10/19/2017

Diane Von Furstenberg is definitely high on my list of favorite brands. Her pieces are classic (im looking at you wrap dress!) and so well made that they will last a lifetime. Of course with any beautiful brand comes a high price tag. A new DVF wrap dress will set you back ATLEAST $300!

And on that note, I have no shame to admit that every piece of DVF I own has been bought secondhand. With any thrift purchase, especially from a source that doesn't authenticate (i.e. eBay), you will want to know what to look for to ensure you are not buying anything knockoff. Keep scrolling to learn a few BIG tips and tricks when buying your new to you DVF!

Investigate the tag

Picture
Your first step for evaluating any DVF piece is to compare the shape and overall appearance of the tag. DVF will be a long, thin white tag with the "Von" in smaller font than "Diane" and "Furstenberg". Also, make sure to review the materials of the item. For the most part, DVF uses high end, non-hybrid natural materials. For example, an authentic Diane Von Furstenberg item will be made out of "Silk" and NOT "Silk Jersey". It's in those little details!

Country of origin? Doesn't Matter!

With some items, being made in China is a big red flag. Many high end designers maintain their factories in the "fashion countries," if you will (ie Italy, France, England, etc.) However, DVF has had factories in China and other countries, like Poland, for quite some time. If you see one of these countries, don't immediately pass it for a knock off.

Look for the Signature DVF hologram

Picture
A great way to authenticate a DVF item is to look for their signature hologram on the inside seam. Although it may be difficult to see in this photo, their is woman's face pictured in the hologram. Before you buy any DVF off eBay or Poshmark, ALWAYS ask for a picture of the hologram. If they say it does not have one, or it is missing, it's safer to pass.

Check for the item Name and number

Picture
Another handy way to authenticate this brand is to inspect and research the item name and number, which is nearly always included underneath the hologram. Google both pieces of information to ensure that the item you find online matches the one you are preparing to buy, or if it even exists at all.

Just like any other secondhand purchase, you always want to do your research and bug the seller for as many pictures as you can get to ensure you are getting the exact item you are hoping for. As an eBay seller myself, I am always happy to provide more pictures. Returns are such a pain (for both buyer and seller!) so it is always better to make sure you create a happy customer!

I'm trying to find some info on the DVF Vintage label with vintage in pink under the DVF. I have a Julian wrap dress that look very authentic but I'm confused by the label. Also there is no hologram.

I think quality goods can be made in China - but what I DON'T trust is anything containing leather or fur because China is renowned for horrible animal cruelty. Please know that if you're supporting a brand that has their leather goods made in China, those animals are usually tortured and skinned alive, and if we purchase those goods, we're condoning that behavior.

Hi - I have just bought a DVF dress from an online secondhand shop - it definitely doesn't feel DVF, the hologram is of lips only (not a face) - which I think I have on other DVF dresses that I purchased from the DVF store, but can't tell for sure (been washed too many times)!? Is there any other way I can verify it's real aside from the above?
Many thanks - Heather
